Guild Interior

Visiting San Diego, the husband found this restaurant while doing food research for our trip. We were wowed by the eclectic building, as the restaurant is butted up against a welding arts studio, tucked into the Barrio Logan/ downtown Gaslamp neighborhood of downtown San Diego.

Guild farm + vine

We started with the day’s ‘farm + vine’ – the Guild’s daily appetizer selection of 3 different cheeses and wines. The food presentation was done to highlight the cheeses being experienced.

Guild daily fishI decided to try the chef’s fish special (since we were in San Diego, sampling the seafood was a must). Herb-encrusted halibut on a bed of fresh local corn, accompanied with a sweet potato mash.

The hubbie had the pork chop with lime cilantro black beans, arugula accompanied with a cumin verde creme fraiche and the house pico de gallo (you can see part of the dish behind mine).

The portions can be viewed as small by some considering the prices, but in our eyes, they were perfect – you definitely weren’t bursting after the meal, but the quality of ingredients and execution were very high, showing that the chef and kitchen had a high emphasis on quality vs. quantity.

August 2009 update

It looks like the Guild has closed (perhaps temporarily, perhaps permanently). It seems that food quality has been up and down in the past year, so I wonder if this was the reason for the closure. Hopefully they’ll re-open with the same high standards – we would definitely go back if we visit San Diego again.
